Welcome to the
Blackheath Philosophy Forum

2012 Season

In 2012 we will discuss two strands of philosophical thought:

"Philosophy & Rights"

and

"Mind & Brain"

Starting Saturday May 12 and continuing until July 28

The 2012 season of talks will be divided into one talks on a politcal
aspect of philosophy (should we have a Bill of Rights?), followed by five talks on cognitive
philosophy, presenting the latest information
and ideas about the brain and consciousness.

A seventh talk will be presented by younger philosophers. Details will be posted on
this site shortly. The Forum is initiating greater involvement by young philosophers
this year. They will take part in panel discussions after the talks.

We are also holding a series of informal meetings, coffee mornings,
lunches, etc, for those interested in discussing philosophical matters.
Further details will be sent to you via our email Newsletter and will also be posted here.
If you don't already receive it, please click HERE to
give us your email address.

Continue the debates online

We have launched a new initiative to continue and deepen the debates arising from our regular talks using an online debate mapping tool (http://debategraph.org ) that our chairman has been closely involved in developing. If you are interested in participating please contact Peter Baldwin

Blackheath Philosophy Weekends

For out-of-towners a visit to Blackheath for the Forum is an enjoyable way to
spend a weekend. Click HERE for details of accommodation and
the weekend program of wining & dining.

Blackheath Philosophy Forum was conceived in 2002 by Lis Bastian, then a newcomer to Blackheath, in conjunction with two long-time residents: Peter Baldwin, a former member of Federal Parliament, and Jean Curthoys, formerly Senior Lecturer in the Philsophy Department of the University of Sydney. They were interested in holding regular discussion forums on philsophical topics. Members of the committee come from a variety of backgrounds. Some have a background in academic philosophy, others do not. What we have in common is an abiding interest in the subject, and a commitment to making its insights and debates available to a wide audience. The current Chair of the Committee is Peter Baldwin.
